Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Monee, IL, from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. Interment will be St. Paul’s Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 5323 W. Margaret Street, Monee, IL 60449.
Lois A. Smit (nee Mills) age almost 102, recently of Flourtown, PA, formerly of Monee, IL passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on October 30, 2018.
Lois was born in Magnolia, IL, on November 14, 1916, and was educated in that area. She graduated from Magnolia High School as Salutatorian of her class. She married Gilbert W. Smit in 1943 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Monee, and they lived in Monee for all 37 years of their marriage. In the years following Gilbert’s death, Lois spent time in the Philadelphia area with her daughter Bonnie and her family and returned often to Monee to be with her son Bruce and his family.
Lois was an administrative assistant for over 33 years at Green Garden Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Monee, IL. She enjoyed sewing/tailoring with great skill as well as baking and cooking. Lois won many Blue Ribbons at county fairs for baking entries, and one of her recipes was published in the Taste of Home magazine. She was an active participant in church and volunteer activities at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Monee as well as in the Philadelphia area.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert W. Smit; her parents William and Pluma Mills, and her sister Faye (Mills) Pfeifer.
Lois was a dedicated and loving wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her son Bruce Smit (Tammy); daughter Bonnie Baum McKeever; grandchildren Taylor Baum (Martha), Lindsey Smit, Bradley Smit (Sierra), and Andrew Smit (Kailee); and great-grandchildren Charlotte Baum and Henry Baum.
